The New Face of Email - Google Inbox

If you are a person who uses GMail a lot, or you are a tech geek, you may have definitely heard of Google's new email app, Google Inbox. It introduces the new design parameters set by Google, which they are calling Material Design, and it looks beautiful.

What does Inbox do?

If you have not yet done some groundwork on the app, then this question will probably be plaguing your mind because, I mean, what can a new email app do? Email is email, and the way it works cannot be changed, right?
Wrong! Because Google has found a way of doing so, and based on my experience, it works really well. It prioritizes your email, and also groups them according to your actions. For example, it groups all of your purchases, or it could be any promotions etc. Google is calling this bundles.
The create button opens a list of actions. You can create a new mail or a remainder and there is also other things you can do. Oh, and remainders. It will come to you as a mail in the time given, and that functionality is really good.
Apart form all that, there are really subtle changes to your user experience that you might not notice, like the new fonts or the new animations.
Oh, and did I forget to mention that it works seamlessly with your GMail account, and you don't have to go through a long drawn process to get it up and running.

How can you get it?

Here's the bad news. Inbox is invite only - fortunately I got my invite and its working out quite well for me! If you too want the invite, then you have to email "inbox@google.com". You don't have to type about any requests or whatsoever - just send a blank mail, with no subject to inbox@google.com, and thats it, you are good to go. Immediately after the mail is sent, you'll get a confirmation saying that Google will send you an invite whenever possible.
The app, however, is available for download at the play store, and you can download it, but not use it because it requires an account that has been activated with the invite.
Also, please note that i wrote this article barely hours after i got the app, so there will be a more detailed review coming soon!

Apple's next generation Operating System - OS X 10.10 Yosemite

Apple recently released OS X 10.10 or Yosemite at its special event on the 16th of October to the public. It was made available for free in the App Store, from where you can download it for free if you have a Mac. It is quite a bulky update, considering the visual overhaul. This update is a major one to OS X.One of the major things that you will notice after you update is the sleek, minimalist, transparent, layered look that Apple introduced in iOS 7. The design is appealing and very easy on the eyes. The Notification center has been given a major design upgrade as well. Now it carries on the design of the notification center of iOS 8, with a similar transparent effect and also the functionality of adding widgets to it.The window animations have been changed, and they even changed the font, which is quite pleasing to the eyes. Apart from the look, there are some other changes they have made to the OS. Lets see what all apps have been updated with new look, and what other funcationalities have been added to this version of OS X.
The Notification Center

FaceTime now takes a live recording of you when you open it, which just looks awsome. It also adds some sort of filter over the live recording, which makes viewing the text easier.

iMessage also has that new look now, with the toolbar being translucent with that simple feel. The iMessage app also now has the ability to send texts if you have an iPhone. It also adds the functionality to send voice message and video recordings. You can also share locations which is quite an awaited feature for this app.
The iMessage App

Apple Maps has taken a leap forward from where it used to be earlier. Not only has it been updated with a new design, but the accuracy has improved substantially. It is able to track your location upto 100 meters accurately which is really a huge improvement for a new player in this field.
The Maps App

File Vault

File Vault is a new feature which has been added to OS X. This allows the user to encrypt the content of his/her hard drive, a much awaited feature which has been present in its rival operating system, Windows since Windows 7. The encrypted data can only be accessed with the key provided. Personally, this feature is a pain to setup. You have to keep your Mac plugged in all the time (that is, if you have a Laptop), and it takes approximately more than an hour to finish the process.

Spotlight Search

Spotlight now has a new design, and it has been updated with the same parameters as in iOS 8. Additionally, it guesses what you are seraching for, and that is really helpful. It also has been updated with the new design. It recommends search terms as well, and I found this to be helpful while searching for information.
Spotlight has this new sleek design

iWork is a package consisting of Pages, Keynote and Numbers. It is basically Apple's mock up of Microsoft Office, with Pages resembling Word, Keynote for PowerPoint and Numbers resembling Excel. They all have the new look now.Keynote now has cool new text features and animations that might give it a very tiny edge over the more influential PowerPoint.Numbers now allows you to transpose tables and format them easily.

Safari, like Spotlight, now completes your search terms. It has been updated to the new look, and with it, they have included a "Bird's Eye" tab view, which is really convenient. Apple also claims that Safari loads JavaScript six times faster, and also gives you 2 hours of more battery life than before.
Safari's new tab view

The eMail app of this Operating System has been redesigned completely. This new interface promotes better organization of the mail in your inbox. Mail also now supports mail marking, or, in other words, labelling your mail. You also get 5GB for each mail now.

AirDrop and AirPlay

AirDrop and AirPlay now have added functionalities. AirPlay can now stream videos from your iPhone to your Apple TV wirelessly without having a WiFi connection in your devices.
AirDrop now lets you transfer larger amounts and more types of files, for example, your email amongst your Apple devices.

Continuity and Family Sharing

Apple has introduced two new features, Continuity and Family Sharing, about which we have already written in our iOS 8 article which can be found here. Continuity maintains your work amongst all your iDevices, which is quite convenient. Also, if you were working on a Mac and needed to continue the same work on your iPad, all you have to do now is swipe up from the bottom of your iPad in the exact same app which you were working on, you can continue from exactly where you left your work earlier.

Other Stuff

An honorable mention to the beautiful trash can icon present in the dock of this OS, although I feel that they could have added the way to delete files using the delete button itself, since going to the menu and clicking "Move to trash" is a huge pain. Also shout out to those who don't know, the latest iMac comes with a 5K Retina display which is a huge leap from the current standards of screen resolutions. Apple Pay is also up now and people can use it if they think it is a secured and reliable source of paying online. Also, in Yosemite, the iTunes app does not look that great, it needs lots of improvements.
iTunes in Yosemite

All in all, Yosemite is just the incorporation of the style that Apple introduced last year in iOS 7 into the OS X operating system. Also I would like to mention that this update takes up a lot of space, so Apple now needs to concentrate on making this OS a lot lighter. If you are a fan of new design brought in by Apple, and you have a Mac waiting to be updated, Yosemite will give you a real treat.

Samsung gear s impressions

The sixth smartwatch from Samsung in this year that claims to be an apparent smartphone replacement has finally been announced with top of the line specs and Samsung's Tizen software with inputs from Nike and Timex. Let's see if Samsung can win the smartwatch market with this one or it is just a passer bye. So let’s get right into the review of the Samsung Galaxy Gear S.

The specifications

To start off, this watch has an amazing dual core 1 GHZ Samsung processor which is customized and has 512MB of ram. It has a 300 MAH battery and a 2 inch curved super AMOLED display with a resolution of 350 x 480 pixels which make the display very sharp for text and images. Around the display there is an aluminium frame which gives it a luxurious and premium feel. It has 4GB of internal storage and 3G, Bluetooth 4.1, USB 2.0 and WiFi(Wireless Fidelity). The phone also has a micro SIM card slot and a speaker for calls. The Samsung Gear S features a wide variety of sensors which include the following:
  • Accelerometer,
  • Gyroscope,
  • Compass,
  • Ambient Light sensor,
  • Heart Rate monitor,
  • UV light sensor
  • Barometer.

The charger comes with a strapon of capacity 350 MAh for longer battery life. It also has IP67 certification to make it water and dust resistance. The dimensions come in at 39.9 x 58.1 x 12.5 mm. The watch also comes with interchangeable watch faces and bands to suit ones style and mood. The watch also has a physical home button like the gear 2 and gear 2 neo. The charging dock which is also a battery pack is better than the previous ones but could still use some improvements.

Software of the Gear S

Moving on to the software there is a lot to say about Samsung’s Tizen operating system that if fully packed with features. First,Samsung tied up with Nike to bring Nike+ to track your fitness. Additionally, Samsung also tied up with Timex to bring their Timex Ironman One GPS+ to have a GPS on the watch. They still have their Samsung features like S health and S commands on this watch. They also did not forget to add an on screen keyboard that supports 69 different languages. There is more with turn by turn navigation from HEAR maps and the latest news provided by The Financial Times all on this watch. Samsung also announced 1000 apps for their Tizen operating system on the time of release of the Gear S. Although the curve on the watch fits very well on the hand the watch is just too big for people with small hands. It is a perfect watch for someone who wants a big watch with sporty rubber bands. Samsung, although claims it to be a smartphone replacement but it lacks a camera. In addition, the non-expandable 4 GB of memory is also not sufficient for day to day use for a phone replacement. The pricing of the Gear S doesn't seem to be affordable.

Overall, it is the best smartwatch that Samsung has to offer currently. It has a wide variety of features but, at the same time, we strongly agree that it is just not capable to be a smartphone replacement. We expect much more from a smartphone replacement and this is just not it but it it worth it to look at how this watch fares when it is released. It might also be worth anticipation that Samsung will release a better version of this smartphone

LG G Watch R Impressions

LG G Watch R  pestoverde/Flickr
The first shot of LG into the round smart watch category is by far the best smart watch lg has ever made. Unveiled at IFA 2014 it comes with a completely round display and a pixel dense display that is sharp and bright enough to use outdoors. Let find out if this is worth the money we spend on it.
The biggest feature of the Lg G watch R is its completely round display with no bezels at the bottom or around the display. Powered by the standard snapdragon 400 processor clocked at 1.2 GHZ and 410 milli-ampere battery. Lg clams that the watch can last for one and a half to two days on moderate use.

What's in it?

LG G Watch R  pestoverde/Flickr
Running android wear version 1.0 on a display of 1.3 inches that is made up of OLED so that it can remain on all the time without effecting the battery life a lot.it uses Bluetooth 4.0 to get connected to your phone. It is compatible with any phone with android 4.3(jelly bean) or above. The watch comes with 4 GB of storage and 512 MB of ram. The watch features a large number sensors, they include a Gyroscope, an accelerometer, a Compass, Barometer and Heart Rate Monitor. The watch has a 22 mm leather band which is changeable and an aluminum frame to house all the components. The charger is the same as the one on the original G watch but just rounded off to fit the new design. The watch also has IP67 certification that makes it water resistance to one meter of water for 30 minutes and also dust resistant no matter how small the grain. This watch brings the same amount of functionality as the original G watch but on a round design.

In the end the watch is one of the best that today’s hardware and software can deliverer but
lacks an ambient light sensor and it will be far too large with people with small wrists.it is a
perfect upgrade for any one coming from a g-shock or similar sized watches. The charging
dock is also not very easy to use compared to some of the other offerings. The prizing is
expected to be between 250-300 dollars. So let’s see how it fairs when it actually releases
against some the other smart watches. It is expected to hit the market at some time in late
October or early November.

WhatsApp-Facebook deal has been officially sealed

flickr/Microsiervos Geek Crew

Facebook has finally completed its mammoth $19 billion deal to acquire WhatsApp, the worlds most popular internet messaging app. The news came out long back in February 2014 and since then, the deal was underway.

Whats interesting is that WhatsApp's revenues have totalled only $20 million annually, though it doesn’t charge the $1 fee annually for many of the countries and it still has been sold for a mammoth $19 billion. This clearly indicates that facebook is looking to monetize WhatsApp in a unique way. Advertising would be a great option which would guarrentee high revenues but I don’t think that would be done.Another option would be to use the data and analyse it and use it for various things. This would be a very good option for facebook to bolster its presence. They can also sell the data to analytics companies, which are very hungry for this data, as its immensely valuable. In a few days, Techist.net will come up with a detailed report as to what facebook might do with WhatsApp and how it might monetize it. You can also sign up for the newsletter.

Nexus 6 - Expectations and Leaks

With the launch of the next Nexus looming over us, here is what we want and also what has been leaked about it.

One of the major leaks is that Nexus X or the Nexus

6 will purportedly boast a 5.9" screen, which is way too big for the Nexus standards. Also, this Nexus will be built by Motorola, and not LG as expected. This version of Nexus will come with Android L, the upcoming version of Google Android, of which we have posted a brief description here.

We want everything that was not there in the last Nexus, that is, Nexus 5 to be in this one. First off, we want more than 3GB RAM. Android, as we know, isn't a very memory efficient OS and performs good in more than 2GB of RAM. Android L, since it has so many visual modifications, should perform fluidly in more than 3GB RAM.
Last time, "Nexus 5 came in with a camera which performed okay, but in this one, we hope it comes with OIS and a better image processing sensor. It would be really nice to take good pictures with a Nexus.
The Snapdragon 810 is Qualcomm's latest processor, so we expect the Nexus to come with that as well. The processing power and the 64 bit computing of this processor will be enough to give Nexus 6 huge Benchmarks.
Also, a 4K display that gives a pixel density of more than 500 ppi would be really good. Alongside that, we want a SUPER AMOLED display and a Sapphire crystal glass would give the phone an edge over the others in the market.
The nice Graphite feel of Nexus 5 worked, but like in the Moto X, that rubber finish felt a little more solid. Also, a removable back and battery and an SD Card External expansion upto 128GB wouldn't hurt at all. We also expect the Nexus 6 to come in single - SIM and dual - SIM variants, to suit business and personal use.
Battery is also one of the main issues with many phones these days - the phones hardly last a day when in use although older phones were giving us more than three days of battery life. So we decided, we will not settle for a battery that has a capacity of less than 3000mAh. It will not last even a few hours if the battery is less than the specified capacity. Also, why can't Google add an ultra power saving mode in the phone? I found that feature in S5 really useful.

We would like the phone to be really amazing and it will be really nice if the Nexus 6 came in an affordable price range like the Nexus 5. Let's see what Google does and hope that it will be a game - changer.

Affiliate programs - Benefits and uses

Affliate programmes - benefits and uses

Affiliate programs are the new trend. Almost each and every blogger in the whole sphere of blogging has started to use affiliate programs and here at Techist.net, we have started a Dreamhost affiliate program, but not to make money, but to test it.

Why affiliate

Usually, bloggers make more money depending on the amount of traffic they get but with affiliate programs, even if you get 1000 visitors per month, which can be done quite easily, you can generate lot of revenue. For example, almost all the hosting companies offer atleast $30 per signup and this goes up to $125 per sign up. Moreover, you dont need to have high amount of traffic which is really good for beginners. In addition, most of the bloggers have really good communication skills so this can help you in

Consider the following

  • You get 1000 unique visitors per month
  • You have signed up for an affiliate program which offers $50 per sign up
  • 5 % of your visitors sign up considerign that your content is related to the product you're affiliated to

5% of 1000 is 50 sign ups
Therefore you'd be making $50*50 = $2500

As you all know, Adsense is the most advanced advertisement network and at the same time it is very difficult to get into it. But lets assume that you got into adsense, and got a CTR(Click through rate) of 10% which is actually very high, you'd get 1000 clicks with 10000 unique views. In addition, if your CPC(Cost per click) was $0.2 per click your earnings would be
0.2 * 1000 = $200

As you have very well seen above, with just 5% of your visitors signing up for your affiliate program, you can earn $2500 and on the other hand, Adsense would generate a mere $200 considering that your content is perfect. affiliate programs have no limit, and if you have really good writing and convincing skills, you can make much more money from affiliate programmes. I will be covering more and more about affiliate programs and also the top affiliate programmes which pay very high per signup.
